Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of being the principal architects behind illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Gbande alleged that the NPP, during its time in government, presided over widespread environmental destruction through unregulated mining and is now attempting to “whitewash” its record.
“The NPP has caused significant harm to Ghana in terms of galamsey, and the NDC is working to fix it. It’s a gradual process; we have only been in power for eight months,” he stressed.
According to him, the NDC administration has already taken decisive steps to regulate small-scale mining by introducing stronger welfare and supervisory measures for miners.
“Our government has made decisive efforts to address the issue. The NDC’s approach to welfare for miners is that while you can mine, it must be under government supervision and in adherence to the laws. Under the NPP, it was a free-for-all, which led to the destruction of the country,” Mr Gbande said.
He reiterated that the NDC remains committed to restoring order in the mining sector, ensuring lawful operations, and safeguarding the environment from further degradation.
