“It Is About Time Good Men Speak Up” — Godfred Dame Defends Role in Chief Justice Case

Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has come out strongly in defence of his decision to represent suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, dismissing accusations of conflict of interest as unfounded.

Speaking to Joy News after filing a writ on behalf of the Chief Justice at the Supreme Court, Mr Dame issued a passionate rebuttal to critics questioning his legal involvement.

“It is about time that good men in this country speak for what is righteous and what is right,” he said.
“We cannot let people mislead the public and let it go uncorrected.”

The former Attorney General’s remarks come amidst growing public scrutiny over the Chief Justice’s legal challenge to the committee investigating petitions for her removal.

In the suit, filed on Wednesday, May 21, the Chief Justice is seeking an interlocutory injunction to suspend the work of the committee and restrain Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu from participating in the inquiry—citing concerns about fairness and impartiality.

She has also asked the Supreme Court to bar the full committee—composed of Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, and Prof. James Sefah Dzisah—from proceeding further until the matter is resolved.

Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, pending the outcome of the investigation into the three petitions filed against her.

Despite the political undertones surrounding the case, Mr Dame was emphatic in his belief that his actions were grounded in principle, not partisanship.

“If there is any attorney general who, right from his appointment, has stood up for the judiciary and spoken against attacks on it, it is I,” he asserted.
