Inusah Fuseini: Internal Strife Threatens NPP’s Political Future

Former Tamale Central MP Inusah Fuseini

Former Tamale Central MP Inusah Fuseini has warned that Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) is standing on shaky ground due to deep internal divisions, which, if unresolved, could jeopardise the party’s survival as a strong political contender.

His comments follow the official presentation of a report by the 12-member committee that was tasked to investigate the causes of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections. The report was submitted to the party’s national leadership on Wednesday, April 16, at a gathering held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The committee was chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye.

Discussing the fallout on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, April 19, Mr Fuseini stated that the biggest challenge facing the NPP is its inability to unite around a shared vision after its electoral loss.

“Your party is clearly facing an existential threat,” he said. “There are those who believe that Nana Akufo-Addo is largely to blame for the party’s defeat. On the other hand, there’s another group that insists the only way forward is to build on Akufo-Addo’s legacy.”

He described the NPP’s current internal dynamic as a case of “confession and avoidance”, where both sides are entrenched in their views but reluctant to make concessions or acknowledge past errors.

“This isn’t the time to protect legacies or point fingers. The party must admit where it went wrong and begin the difficult process of rebuilding trust with Ghanaians,” Mr Fuseini advised.

According to him, many in the public now view the party as fragmented and lacking accountability, especially with loyalists of former President Akufo-Addo still wielding significant influence in shaping the party’s direction.

The internal tension, he noted, is preventing the NPP from presenting a cohesive front and could hinder efforts to revamp the party ahead of future elections.

Mr Fuseini’s comments add to the growing national debate over the future of the NPP and whether it can overcome internal strife in time to remain relevant in Ghana’s evolving political landscape.
