Inusah Fuseini Apologises to Nayiri and Mamprugu Chiefs Over Bawku Conflict Remarks

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has issued an unqualified apology to the Nayiri, the Mamprugu Youth, and the Council of Chiefs for comments he made regarding the ongoing Bawku conflict, which were deemed offensive by some members of the Mamprugu community.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mr Fuseini explained that his remarks were made spontaneously during a broader discussion and were not intended to provoke or cause offence. He noted that the conversation was not originally centred on the Bawku crisis but had veered in that direction during the discourse.

“It was unfortunate that my views, though honestly expressed, appeared to align with the Kusasi position. That was never my aim. I am Dagomba, but suddenly I was being labelled as Kusasi simply for suggesting a possible approach to peace,” he stated.

Mr Fuseini clarified that his comments were not meant to support any particular faction in the Bawku conflict but were made with the intention of promoting peace and exploring possible solutions to the long-standing tensions.

“Upon deep reflection, I realised my comments did not sit well with the Mamprusi people. They were not meant to destabilise the status quo, nor were they meant to undermine any traditional authority. I was simply pursuing what I thought could help bring justice and peace to Bawku,” he said.

Realising the depth of offence his comments may have caused, the former legislator used the opportunity on Newsfile to extend a heartfelt and respectful apology to the traditional leadership and youth of Mamprugu.

“With the greatest respect, I render an unqualified apology to the youth of Mamprugu, the Nayiri, and his Council of Chiefs. It was never my intention to hurt anyone,” he said.

He added a spiritual appeal for forgiveness, saying:

“On this Holy Saturday, I pray that my apology will be accepted by all those I have offended—my brothers in Mamprugu, the youth, and the traditional authorities.”

The apology comes amid heightened sensitivities around the Bawku conflict, where any public statement can have significant cultural and political implications. Mr Fuseini’s gesture is seen as a step toward healing and maintaining unity among the various ethnic and traditional groups in northern Ghana.
