A presidential staffer, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has taken a strong stance in the ongoing standoff between the government and MultiChoice Ghana, insisting that the pay-TV operator cannot continue to cry foul while profiting from the Ghanaian market.
Speaking on Prime Insights, the former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) dismissed suggestions that the government’s regulatory push amounts to bullying. She argued that MultiChoice must either comply with Ghana’s rules or leave the market entirely.
“This is a sovereign nation, and you are coming here to do business because you are earning money. So why are you here? If you’re not making a profit, you should just say, ‘You are stressing us, so we are folding up.’ The fact that you are still here means there is some kind of benefit that endures from your operations. So why don’t you calm down and say, ‘This is your country. I’m here,’” she said.
According to her, the company’s continued presence in Ghana is proof of its profitability, and it must accept that doing business in a sovereign state comes with obligations beyond profit-making.
“This has nothing to do with politics. There is no bullying anywhere. It’s about corporate responsibility and respect for the Ghanaian public,” she stressed.
Her comments come against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter dispute between the government and MultiChoice, spearheaded by Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation Samuel Nartey George. The minister has accused the company of charging “unjustifiably high” subscription fees and issued an ultimatum demanding price cuts or facing regulatory sanctions, including possible suspension of operations.
The impasse has dominated both traditional and social media, fuelling public pressure for reform in the pay-TV sector.
Nana Yaa Jantuah’s intervention also echoes her earlier criticism of MultiChoice in August, when she accused the broadcaster of offering “outdated foreign content” while burdening Ghanaian consumers with steep fees.
