“If You Don’t Fight Galamsey, We’ll Boot You Out” — GMA President Tells Gov’t

The President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Frank Serebour, has issued a strong warning to political leaders, declaring that Ghanaians will use the ballot box to punish those who fail to take decisive action against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking to Citi News on Thursday, September 18, 2025, Dr Serebour stressed that while the GMA has traditionally relied on advocacy and professional negotiations to influence policy, the worsening impact of galamsey on public health demands tougher accountability measures.

“When the GMA asked political parties to declare their positions and sign a pact, we wanted clarity on where they stand. Some called for strike action, but strikes aren’t sustainable. The only consequence politicians fear is electoral loss. My message is, “If you don’t fight it, we’ll boot you out,” he declared.

Dr Serebour explained that galamsey’s damage extends far beyond environmental destruction, citing links to contaminated water sources, respiratory diseases, and a surge in preventable illnesses. He argued that these health burdens place unsustainable pressure on Ghana’s already stretched healthcare system.

According to him, while the GMA will continue to use ultimatums and mobilise public opinion, its ultimate strategy is to ensure that voters hold politicians accountable at the polls.

“We should continue to apply pressure. We will continue to talk and to advocate,” he said, adding that the Association will intensify nationwide campaigns to expose political inaction.

The GMA has in recent years amplified its voice in national debates, insisting that health outcomes cannot be divorced from environmental policies. With illegal mining still rampant in many communities, Dr Serebour maintained that it is time for citizens to demand clear commitments from leaders and refuse to tolerate empty promises.
