MTN Mobile Money Limited has issued a strong warning to customers following a surge in complaints of mobile money (MoMo) fraud.
The company is urging Ghanaians to ignore any call or message claiming to be from MTN unless it comes from one official number: 0244300000.
This comes after a viral video showed a woman in tears claiming she had lost over GH¢11,000 from her MoMo wallet. Another social media user also reported losing GH¢13,000, which she said was money meant for a surgical procedure. Both victims insist they never shared their PINs with anyone.
But according to Godwin Tamakloe, MTN’s Chief Regulatory, Risk and Compliance Officer, it’s technically impossible for money to vanish from a wallet unless the victim inadvertently gives out sensitive information.
Speaking on Hot FM’s Morning Drive with Don Kwabena Prah, Tamakloe said:
“The only official number MTN uses to call customers is 0244300000. If anyone calls from a different number claiming to be from MTN, it is a fraud attempt. Hang up immediately.”
He further warned:
“If someone tells you they are from MTN and want to help you stop fraud on your account – they are the fraudster. Don’t fall for it.”
Key Tips for MoMo Safety:
- Never share your MoMo PIN with anyone.
- Ignore calls from unknown numbers claiming to be MTN.
- Verify any communication. Only 0244300000 is MTN’s official line.
- If in doubt, report immediately to MTN or the police.
MTN says it is committed to fighting MoMo fraud but stressed that customer vigilance is the first line of defence.
