I Won’t Cancel the Free SHS Programme, I Will Improve It – Mahama Assures

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, assuring the nation that he has no plans to discontinue the policy.

During his first State of the Nation Address in his second term on Thursday, February 27, President Mahama emphasised that his administration would focus on refining the program to address its persistent challenges.

“Mr. Speaker, let me repeat it once again. I, John Dramani Mahama, will not cancel the Free SHS Programme. I will rather make it better from the implementation problems that it has been facing,” he declared.

He reassured students, parents, and educators that his government is dedicated to enhancing the quality of education and ensuring the program’s long-term success.

President Mahama also criticised the previous administration’s handling of the initiative, accusing them of inflating the number of beneficiaries for political advantage.

He highlighted how this has strained the education system, leading to overcrowded classrooms, insufficient infrastructure, and a lack of adequate teaching resources.

He outlined his administration’s vision to make Free SHS more effective through targeted reforms aimed at improving access, quality, and sustainability.

“Our priority is to improve learning conditions, provide necessary resources, and ensure that students receive the best possible education,” he asserted.

His remarks have sparked discussions on the future of Free SHS, with many stakeholders eager to see the reforms his government will implement to address the current deficiencies and enhance the program’s overall impact.
