I Will Not Contest 2028 Elections- Mahama Pledges

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit, declaring that he will not contest in the 2028 elections. According to him, this decision enhances his ability to enforce strict fiscal discipline and resist the temptation of election-year overspending, a practice that has historically destabilised the economy.

Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as part of his three-day state visit, Mahama condemned the recurring trend of governments disregarding fiscal safeguards to curry favour with voters.

“I will not be a candidate in the next elections, and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he stressed.

The president assured that under his leadership, fiscal responsibility will remain a top priority, with policies designed to stabilise the economy and build long-term resilience.

Mahama further highlighted some of his administration’s economic gains since his return to office in 2024. These include a significant decline in inflation, falling interest rates, and a notable appreciation of the cedi — indicators he said reflect growing investor confidence in Ghana’s economy.
