I Wanted to End My Life After My Second $30,000 IVF Attempt Failed – Stephanie Coker Recounts

Nigerian media personality and filmmaker Stephanie Coker Aderinokun has shared a deeply emotional and personal account of her fertility journey, revealing that she once contemplated suicide after a failed IVF (in vitro fertilisation) procedure that cost her $30,000.

In a candid conversation on the “With Chude” podcast, Stephanie opened up about the emotional trauma and financial burden she endured in her quest to become a mother.

She disclosed that while her first IVF attempt was successful and resulted in a pregnancy, her second experience ended in heartbreak.

“I got pregnant on the first IVF, and the second one failed, and I actually wanted to stand in front of a car and just let the car hit me,” she confessed. “I really hated myself then.”

According to Stephanie, the second procedure, which took place in Los Angeles, left her shattered. She recalled the moment a nurse broke the news of the failed pregnancy over the phone.

“The nurse called and said, ‘Hi, Stephanie, I’m sorry to give you this bad news. It was negative.’ I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I asked myself, “What did I spend all this money and time on?’ I couldn’t imagine going back to Lagos without a baby.”

Stephanie’s story sheds light on the hidden pain many women face in silence while battling infertility, especially within a society where motherhood is often seen as a measure of womanhood.

She joins a growing list of Nigerian celebrities, including Ini Edo and Nse Ikpe-Etim, who have publicly shared their struggles with fertility. Ini Edo opted for surrogacy, while Nse Ikpe-Etim revealed she had to undergo the removal of her womb to treat adenomyosis.

Stephanie’s bravery in speaking out is resonating with many across social media, sparking conversations around fertility, mental health, and the need for emotional support for women navigating such challenging experiences.
