I Refuse to Pay for Cedi Recovery With My Life— Cadman Atta Mills Blasts Government Over Galamsey

Cadman Atta Mills, brother of the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, has launched a scathing attack on the government’s handling of illegal mining, declaring that no level of currency stability is worth the devastating health and environmental costs of galamsey.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Mills wrote, “I refuse to pay for the accolades President Mahama and the NDC are receiving for the cedi’s recovery with my health or life. Call it galamsey or ‘legal’ small-scale mining (when bankrolled by the politically connected). It is killing us. #StopGalamseyNow.”

His remarks follow President John Dramani Mahama’s disclosure during a media encounter on September 10, 2025, that the government is still weighing available measures before considering a state of emergency to combat illegal mining.

Illegal mining—widely known as galamsey—has left rivers heavily polluted, destroyed farmlands, and exposed thousands of people to toxic substances such as mercury and cyanide. Despite several clampdowns, the activity has persisted, often backed by politically connected financiers.

Mr Mills’ intervention adds to a growing wave of criticism from civil society organisations, opposition figures, and local communities. Many argue that the government’s reluctance to impose drastic measures reflects political compromises that continue to undermine the fight.
