The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has intensified its nationwide enforcement campaign, leading to the closure of several unlicensed health facilities in the Ashanti Region as part of efforts to sanitise the healthcare sector.
Among the facilities affected are ANKHOR Diagnostics and RASHBILL Eyecare, both operating within the premises of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The closures, carried out during a surprise inspection, left some patients stranded as officials moved in to ensure strict compliance with regulatory standards.
This latest crackdown follows the recent shutdown of 17 health facilities across Ghana for operating with expired licences or under unsafe conditions deemed unfit for healthcare delivery.
HeFRA says the enforcement drive is a crucial part of its broader mandate to eliminate unaccredited and substandard medical facilities, which pose significant risks to public health.
Speaking to the media, Dr Winfred Baah, Chief Executive Officer of HeFRA, said the decision was necessary to uphold quality and safeguard lives.
“Our objective is to protect the public by ensuring that only qualified, licensed, and compliant facilities deliver healthcare services in Ghana. Any facility operating outside the law will face the full rigours of enforcement,” he emphasised.
HeFRA has also hinted at more nationwide inspections in the coming weeks, urging health facility operators to regularise their documentation and meet the required operational standards or risk closure.
