The Ministry of Health has officially responded to the ongoing disciplinary proceedings involving Bernice Aboagye, a staff nurse whose alleged use of inappropriate and unprofessional language toward the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has stirred nationwide conversation on social media.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) earlier issued a formal query to Bernice Aboagye after videos surfaced online showing her using “unprintable, inappropriate and scandalous” language directed at the minister. The incident sparked widespread public discourse, prompting a swift reaction from the ministry.
In a statement released on Sunday, October 12, the Ministry commended the GHS for promptly upholding the standards of professionalism expected of public health workers. However, the minister has also called for clemency, urging that disciplinary measures be balanced with compassion.
“Hon. Akandoh has appealed to the Service to temper justice with mercy in addressing the matter,” the statement noted.
The minister reiterated his openness to divergent views and constructive criticism, emphasising that tolerance and dialogue are central to his leadership approach. While reaffirming the importance of free expression, he cautioned against the use of abusive language, stressing the need for respectful communication within the health sector.
The Ministry also used the opportunity to remind health workers of their responsibility on social media and during public demonstrations, acknowledging the constitutional right to protest but urging discipline in exercising that right.
“The Ministry wishes to emphasise that it has no objection to demonstrations, as they are legitimate expressions of frustration and a constitutional right of every citizen. However, the Ministry will not condone the use of abusive language or acts of indiscipline during such demonstrations,” the statement clarified.
It concluded by urging all health professionals to be mindful of their public engagements, as their conduct reflects on the dignity and reputation of the health sector.
