GRNMA Regional Chair Challenges Ridge Hospital Assault Report, Cites Official Diagnosis of Polycontusion

Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Jefferson Asare, has raised strong objections to aspects of the ministerial committee’s report on the recent assault of a nurse at Ridge Hospital, arguing that the victim’s official medical diagnosis has been downplayed.

The ministerial committee, set up by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Wednesday, August 27, released its findings into the August 18 incident involving rotation nurse Rejoice Tsotso Bortei. According to the committee chairman, Dr Lawrence Ofori-Boadu, medical records did not support claims that the nurse had suffered a shoulder dislocation or fracture. The report stated that while the nurse was given pain relief, advised to take bed rest, and placed under psychological care, there was “no medical evidence” of a serious physical injury.

However, speaking on Point of View on Channel One TV, Mr Asare insisted that the committee overlooked the official medical diagnosis of polycontusion — a condition involving multiple bruises accompanied by swelling, redness, and pain at the point of impact.

“The diagnosis of the lady at the time was polycontusion. When we say ‘polycontusion’, what do we mean? It simply means that there is redness, there is swelling, and there is pain at the site of the hit. That is when you diagnose somebody with polycontusion,” he explained.

Mr Asare expressed concern that the committee’s findings appeared to dismiss or diminish the professional assessment of the medical doctor who treated the victim.

“So do they want to tell us that the doctor who did the diagnosis doesn’t know what he or she is doing? Is that what the committee wants to tell us?” he queried.

He maintained that while the injury may not have involved dislocation, the official diagnosis still confirmed that the nurse suffered physical harm, and this fact should not be obscured in public discourse.

The GRNMA regional chairman further warned that such reports risk undermining the credibility of medical practitioners who made the initial evaluation.

“Findings should not dismiss the reality of the assault or undermine the credibility of the medical professionals who attended to the victim,” he stressed.

The Ridge Hospital assault incident has triggered widespread concern among health workers across the country, with unions calling for stronger protection measures for nurses and midwives on duty.

The GRNMA has hinted it may pursue further action if assurances are not given to safeguard healthcare staff from abuse and attacks at the workplace.
