The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has announced that cryptocurrency traders in Ghana will soon be brought under the tax net as the Authority prepares to roll out new technology to track digital asset transactions.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, August 28, Mr Sarpong said Ghana’s tax laws already cover profits and capital gains, including those from crypto trading.
“If you make a profit or gain, you’re supposed to pay tax,” he stressed.
Mr Sarpong explained that the GRA is building digital systems capable of capturing cryptocurrency transactions and accounts to ensure compliance.
“The technology we are going to deploy will be able to bring in all the crypto accounts into focus, and then we will work with these individuals to make sure that we bring them into the tax net,” he revealed.
The Authority is collaborating with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to strengthen regulations for Ghana’s growing digital asset market.
The move is part of a broader strategy to align Ghana’s tax framework with the digital economy while addressing revenue leakages from online business activities.
Mr Sarpong noted that existing laws already make provisions for Value Added Tax (VAT) on digital transactions.
“When you walk into a physical shop, you pay VAT. In the same way, when you are buying online, you pay VAT. The technology we are working on will ensure we can access the VAT and tax at the point of payment,” he said.
The pilot phase of the new technology is expected to be deployed by September 2025, with a nationwide rollout planned by the end of the year.
Mr Sarpong emphasised that the initiative aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s fiscal policy of avoiding new tax introductions while deepening compliance with existing ones.
“The policy of President Mahama and the Finance Minister is not to introduce so many new taxes because we already have sufficient measures within our tax laws. Once implemented, they will help us deepen and expand the tax net,” he said.
