Gov’t to Set Up Special Cybercrime Court to Fast-Track Prosecution of Online Offenders – Sam George Announces

Hon. Samuel Nartey George

Ghana is set to establish a specialised court dedicated to handling cybercrime cases, a move Communication Minister Samuel Nartey George says will mark a turning point in the fight against rising online threats.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) in Accra, the minister said the specialised court—being created in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Department and the Ministry of Justice—will ensure swift prosecution of cyber-related offences and reduce case backlogs that have hampered enforcement efforts.

“In the last nine months alone, hundreds of suspects have been arrested for cyber offences. To ensure timely justice and deterrence, we are working closely with the Attorney General to establish a court dedicated solely to cybercrime,” he announced.

Mr George emphasised that as Ghana’s internet penetration now exceeds 70%, the country faces an unprecedented rise in threats such as hacking, online fraud, misinformation, and identity theft. These, he noted, require robust legal, institutional, and financial frameworks.

He further revealed that the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), is currently under review to strengthen Ghana’s ability to respond to emerging trends, while sustainable financing measures, including a Cybersecurity Fund, are being implemented.

The minister called on all Ghanaians—citizens, businesses, and institutions—to take shared responsibility for safeguarding the digital space, warning that “a nation’s digital ecosystem is only as strong as its weakest link.”

The announcement was met with applause from cybersecurity stakeholders, diplomats, and security chiefs present, as it underscored the government’s renewed commitment to protecting Ghana’s digital future.
