Gov’t to Launch Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Programme in October

The Government of Ghana has renewed its commitment to launch the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme in the first week of October 2025, a flagship initiative aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on imported poultry, which drains over $300 million annually from the economy.

The programme, which was originally scheduled for July, was postponed following concerns from poultry industry stakeholders over limited consultation and engagement.

Speaking to journalists after launching the second phase of the West Africa Livestock Marketing Programme (PACBAO) organised by the ECOWAS Commission in Accra, Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku assured poultry farmers that the new date will be honoured.

“Plans are at an advanced stage, and it is expected that by the first week of October, His Excellency the President will officially launch the programme. The media will be invited, after which distribution will begin across various constituencies to reach beneficiary farmers,” Mr Opoku said.

He explained that the Ministry is finalising the beneficiary list and completing procurement processes with contractors to supply the birds. “Very soon, implementation will take off,” he added.

The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme is being positioned as a game-changing intervention to empower local poultry farmers, cut down imports, and strengthen food security. The initiative is also expected to create sustainable jobs for youth and women, particularly in rural communities.

By ramping up domestic production, the government hopes to save foreign exchange, stabilise local markets, and establish Ghana as a competitive player in the regional poultry industry.
