The government will today, Thursday, September 4, 2025, make a formal announcement in its escalating standoff with MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, over what it describes as unfair subscription fees.
The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation has warned that MultiChoice risks being shut down by September 6 if it fails to slash its pay-TV charges.
Already, the company is grappling with accumulated regulatory penalties of more than GH₵150,000 after ignoring repeated demands to provide key pricing data. The fines, set at GH₵10,000 per day, have been running for over two weeks.
Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George disclosed that negotiations are ongoing, with MultiChoice presenting fresh proposals on Wednesday night.
“Last night, a team from MultiChoice reached out and made some proposals. We’ve asked for further concessions to be made. I’ve given them up to close of business today,” he told journalists.
He added that the Ministry will issue an official declaration later today, while hinting at “strong indications” of a possible compromise before Saturday’s deadline.
The clash has stirred nationwide debate, with many subscribers voicing long-standing frustrations over DStv’s pricing model. Critics argue that Ghanaian consumers pay disproportionately higher fees compared to other African markets.
If talks fail, the government could take the unprecedented step of suspending MultiChoice’s operations, a move that would disrupt millions of households and spark ripple effects across the country’s media and entertainment industry.
