Gov’t Releases $1m to Avert Deportation of Ghanaian Students in US

The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has disclosed that the government has released $1 million to settle part of its outstanding debt to the University of Memphis in the United States, amid growing concerns over possible scholarship terminations, evictions, and deportations of Ghanaian students.

At a press briefing held in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Registrar of the Secretariat Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei provided firm assurance that no Ghanaian student will be deported as a result of the crisis.

“We are on course with the issues regarding the Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis. Ghanaian students will not be deported; I give you that assurance,” he declared.

The government has already made an initial payment of $400,000, with the additional $1 million currently being processed through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department and the Bank of Ghana before being transferred to university authorities via Washington.

According to Asafo-Agyei, Ghana’s total debt to the university stands at $3.6 million, out of which $1.4 million will be settled shortly, while the remaining balance of $2.2 million will be addressed after a comprehensive audit of the scholarship accounts is completed.

“Because the audit is ongoing, we are not paying all. We owe them $3.6 million in total, and we have paid $400,000 so far. We are now processing a $1 million payment,” he explained.

The announcement comes after weeks of pressure from students, families, and education advocates, following reports of financial strain threatening the academic and immigration status of Ghanaian scholarship recipients in the U.S.

The Secretariat said it remains in constant communication with the university to resolve all outstanding issues and reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting Ghanaian students abroad.
