The official Government of Ghana email service (.gov.gh) has been offline since the early hours of Monday, August 25, 2025, sparking concerns over the security and resilience of the country’s digital infrastructure.
The system reportedly went down around 5:00 a.m. on Monday and has remained inaccessible, disrupting official communications for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) nationwide. The blackout has also fuelled public speculation of a possible cyberattack, given the sensitive nature of government email exchanges.
Responding to the incident, the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) confirmed the outage but dismissed fears of a confirmed cyber intrusion.
“There has been a technical challenge which we are addressing with our technology partners,” NITA’s CEO, Mark Oliver Kevor, said. He added that the Agency is working with its contracted service provider, eSolutions, to restore the platform.
Pressed for a timeline, Mr Kevor admitted, “Not really. But joint technical teams are working on it.”
The disruption has forced some MDAs to resort to personal email accounts or alternative platforms for official correspondence, raising data privacy and security concerns. Analysts warn that the situation could undermine the credibility of government systems if it persists.
“This is not just about downtime — it’s about trust. A prolonged blackout creates room for disinformation and erodes confidence in state institutions’ ability to secure their own digital platforms,” a cybersecurity expert told The Fourth Estate.
The outage comes at a time of rising cybersecurity threats across Africa, where governments and corporations have increasingly been targeted by hackers. Experts argue that the episode should push Ghana to invest more aggressively in resilient IT systems, stronger cybersecurity safeguards, and clear communication protocols for handling national digital disruptions.
