Government to Recruit 50,000 Teachers in 2025 – Education Minister Tells Parliament

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government plans to recruit 50,000 teachers across the country this year to boost the education sector.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament in response to an urgent question, Mr. Iddrisu explained that the recruitment process would commence once the Ministry of Finance grants financial clearance and the Auditor-General concludes a validation exercise to eliminate ghost names from the payroll.

“The recruitment of 50,000 teachers is part of our effort to strengthen teaching and learning at all levels. However, we must first ensure that the payroll is clean and that public funds are being used efficiently,” he stated.

The initiative, once rolled out, is expected to address growing concerns over teacher shortages in many public schools, particularly in rural and underserved communities. The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to education reforms and promised transparency and efficiency in the recruitment process.

Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the news, describing it as a timely intervention to improve quality education delivery and reduce unemployment among qualified teacher trainees.

The exercise is anticipated to begin in the coming months, following clearance from the Finance Ministry and the completion of the Auditor-General’s payroll audit.
