The Government of Ghana has unveiled plans to procure 500 new buses over the short to medium term to revamp Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and strengthen public transportation across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, as part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise the transport sector and advance its economic transformation agenda.
According to Mr Nikpe, the first phase—comprising 150 buses—is expected to arrive early next year, marking a significant step toward restoring the capacity of Metro Mass Transit to deliver affordable, safe, and reliable services to the public.
Metro Mass Transit currently operates just 134 functional buses nationwide, a sharp decline that has hindered its ability to sustain routes, expand coverage, and meet growing commuter demand.
“Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses—about 500 of them over a short to long term—to augment our operations,” Mr Nikpe said. “These buses will be deployed across the country to optimise existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas.”
He added that the new buses will not only improve operational efficiency but also enhance accessibility, affordability, and comfort for passengers—particularly in regional capitals and rural communities where transport options are limited.
The Transport Minister indicated that the initiative is part of a comprehensive plan to modernise MMTL’s terminal facilities, introduce digital ticketing, and improve maintenance and safety standards.
The expansion, he said, will also create employment opportunities for drivers, mechanics, engineers, and administrative staff—contributing to the government’s job creation goals.
Mr Nikpe further revealed that Metro Mass Transit has begun implementing elements of the 24-hour economy policy, starting with its vehicle maintenance department and traffic unit, to ensure round-the-clock service availability.
“These reforms will ensure our buses remain operational and efficient at all times, reducing downtime and improving service reliability for commuters,” he explained.
The new investment in Metro Mass Transit is expected to significantly ease congestion, improve mobility for workers and students, and support economic productivity by making movement within and between cities faster and safer.
