Government Extends Free SHS to 60 Private Schools to Ease Congestion

The Ministry of Education has officially extended the government’s flagship Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy to 60 selected private schools across the country, marking a significant expansion of the initiative since its launch in 2017.

This move, announced in a statement released on Monday, aims to reduce overcrowding in public senior high schools while broadening access to quality secondary education for all students—regardless of whether they attend public or private institutions.

Until now, the Free SHS policy, introduced under the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had been limited to public schools only.

The ministry indicated that the inclusion of these private schools is part of broader educational reforms and partnerships aimed at improving infrastructure challenges and ensuring that no qualified student is left behind due to capacity constraints.

Parents and guardians have been urged to verify the list of participating private schools via the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), or the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) platforms.
