The acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has issued a public apology following widespread backlash over a cash donation he made to former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The controversy began after a video circulated on social media showing Mr Gyamfi handing over an envelope believed to contain U.S. dollars to Nana Agradaa at a public event.
The footage triggered criticism from various quarters, including members of the public and political supporters, many of whom condemned his association with the controversial figure and questioned the appropriateness of the gesture.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, May 11, Mr Gyamfi addressed the backlash, describing the donation as a “private act of kindness” that was never meant to gain public attention.
He acknowledged the public’s concerns and offered an unreserved apology.
“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private and never imagined that it could find its way into the public space,” he wrote. “To all such comrades, I am sincerely sorry for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”
Mr Gyamfi emphasised that the donation was not politically motivated but was in line with his personal values of helping others, regardless of their past.
He expressed regret that the act had caused offence and reiterated his commitment to public service.
“My view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems, and help others has not changed,” he stated. “I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President, for the development of our country.”
He concluded by thanking those who had offered him support and constructive feedback during the episode and extended warm wishes to all mothers on the occasion of Mother’s Day.
