Ghana’s GOLDBOD Model Praised as Blueprint for Africa’s Resource Governance at Washington Meeting

Ghana’s pioneering GOLDBOD model has emerged as a continental benchmark for natural resource governance, earning high praise from finance ministers across Africa at a high-level meeting in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 2025 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings, brought together finance ministers from Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Sudan for strategic discussions with Dr Sidi Ould Tah, president of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group.

While a wide range of development issues were discussed, Ghana’s GOLDBOD initiative stood out as a major talking point. Ministers commended the model for transforming how Ghana manages its gold resources, helping to stabilise the exchange rate, boost economic growth, and enhance transparency in the sector.

They highlighted that the GOLDBOD framework marks a significant shift away from traditional resource management practices, showcasing how African nations can capture greater value from their natural wealth instead of relying on external actors.

Several countries within the AfDB constituency expressed strong interest in adopting similar governance frameworks, noting the potential benefits for transparency, revenue mobilisation, and sustainable economic transformation.

Ghana’s approach was lauded as an example of homegrown innovation that aligns with broader continental goals of value addition and responsible resource exploitation.

About GOLDBOD

The Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) is the sole authority mandated to buy, sell, weigh, grade, assay, value, and export gold and other precious minerals in Ghana. It operates under the oversight of the Ministry of Finance, playing a central role in regulating the mining sector and ensuring that the exploration of Ghana’s mineral wealth contributes directly to national development.

Through this initiative, Ghana has positioned itself as a leader in natural resource governance, setting a practical blueprint for other African nations seeking to leverage their resources for inclusive growth.
