Ghana to Begin Issuing Chip-Embedded Passports from April 28

Ghana will officially begin issuing chip-embedded passports, also known as e-passports, from Monday, April 28, 2025, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s passport system and improve travel document security.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 23.

He stated that the new e-passports will feature an embedded microprocessor that stores the passport holder’s biometric data and photograph, along with other advanced security features.

The chip-embedded passport is an upgrade of the current biometric passport in use by Ghanaians. Among its distinguishing characteristics are robust anti-fraud elements that include both visible (patent) and hidden (latent) security indicators, offering enhanced protection against identity theft and document forgery.

In a move to celebrate Ghana’s cultural identity, the design of the new passport incorporates prominent Adinkra symbols. These include Fawohodie, symbolising freedom and independence, and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu, representing democracy and cooperation.

Minister Ablakwa noted that the launch of the new passport system is aimed at eliminating the role of middlemen, enhancing transparency, and improving accessibility in the application process. “We are focused on delivering a seamless, citizen-centred passport service, free from third-party interference and delays,” he said.

The introduction of e-passports forms part of a broader suite of reforms within the Foreign Affairs Ministry this year. These reforms include the rollout of 24-hour passport service operations, courier delivery of issued passports, electronic tracking of application status, and a 30 per cent reduction in passport application fees.

E-passports are already widely used across many countries, offering a secure and efficient way to process travellers’ information. The biometric data stored in the embedded microchip makes it significantly more difficult for fraudsters to tamper with or forge the document.

Mr Ablakwa underscored that the government’s commitment to digital transformation and public sector reform is unwavering.

He described the e-passport launch as a critical milestone that brings Ghana closer to global best practices in identity management and international travel documentation.

The minister encouraged all eligible citizens to take advantage of the new system once it comes into effect, highlighting the benefits of enhanced security, reduced costs, and improved convenience.
