Ghana Stock Exchange Sees Sharp August Slowdown: Trading Value Drops 88%, Volumes Down 87%

Market activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) took a steep dive in August 2025, as both trading volumes and values contracted sharply compared to July.

According to fresh data from the local bourse, a total of 45.90 million shares worth GHS 203.63 million changed hands in August. This marked a massive 87.19% slump in volumes and an even deeper 88.23% drop in value relative to July’s trading activity.

Despite the month-on-month downturn, the bigger picture shows resilience. On a year-on-year basis, trading volumes jumped 105.54%, while value traded rose 15.76%, reflecting stronger investor participation than in August 2024.

So far in 2025, the market has recorded 555.02 million shares valued at GHS 2.87 billion. Compared to the same period last year, this represents a 14.98% dip in total volumes but a striking 123.00% increase in trading value, suggesting investors are tilting toward fewer but higher-value transactions.

Market watchers interpret this as a shift from speculative retail plays toward bigger institutional moves targeting companies with strong fundamentals.

Indices Paint a Mixed Picture

The equities market delivered a split performance in August.

Analysts say the financial index’s dip reflects banking sector volatility, partly tied to subdued credit growth and tighter regulatory oversight.

Price movements shaped market sentiment in August, with Cocoa Processing Company PLC emerging as the month’s biggest gainer after surging 50.00%. The stock’s rally was buoyed by optimism around the company’s export expansion plans.

Other top gainers included:

On the downside, Ecobank Transnational Inc. (ETI) shed 6.10%, extending its cautious run amid concerns over cross-border risks. Other laggards included:

While August’s sharp contraction in volumes and values signals investor caution, the robust year-to-date gains of the GSE indices suggest momentum remains intact. Analysts say the market could continue to attract value-seeking institutional investors, especially if corporate earnings in Q3 reaffirm confidence.
