The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has launched the Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment Policy, a new initiative aimed at addressing gender-based violence and ensuring a safer and more inclusive environment within the service and the wider public.
The policy was unveiled during the International Women’s Day celebration under the theme, “Accelerate Action for All Women and Girls’ Rights, Equality, and Empowerment.”
Speaking at the event, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Maud A. Quainoo, President of the Immigration Ladies Association, reaffirmed GIS’s dedication to gender equality and safeguarding all personnel and stakeholders.
“As a gender-sensitive organization, we ensure that gender issues are addressed, and individuals are protected within the service,” she stated.
She encouraged women to embrace opportunities that help bridge the gender gap in society.
Chief Superintendent Evelyn Danquah, Head of the Gender Mainstreaming Section, elaborated on the policy’s goals, which include:
- Increasing women’s representation at decision-making levels.
- Promoting the recruitment of more women into the service.
- Creating a secure and inclusive workplace for all personnel.
Additionally, she highlighted the establishment of an anti-sexual harassment committee, allowing both officers and the general public to report cases of misconduct.
“This policy is not just for our officers; it extends to the public. Anyone can report an officer’s misconduct,” she emphasized.
She further expressed her vision for a more inclusive service, stating, “We want an organization where everyone feels a sense of belonging.”
The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi (Esq.), expressed his satisfaction in witnessing progress toward gender equality within the GIS.
“The theme for this year’s celebration calls for justice and equality. Women play a vital role in driving change and development in society,” he noted.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mr. Asuah Takyi highlighted key achievements, including the establishment of the Gender Mainstreaming Section on October 19, 2019, and the development of the GIS gender policy.
“I made it a priority to establish the gender section and ensure the development of this policy,” he stated, adding that he hopes his successor will continue advancing gender equality within the service.
He also expressed gratitude to the Spanish Embassy for its support in the policy’s formulation and implementation.
With this initiative, GIS strengthens its commitment to creating a safer work environment, promoting gender equality, and ensuring accountability within the service.
