Lawyer and entrepreneur Victoria Bright has bemoaned what she describes as Ghana’s loss of boldness in pursuing transformational national goals, stressing that the country no longer dares to “dream big”.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show as Ghana marked Founder’s Day, Madam Bright said the enduring legacy of Dr Kwame Nkrumah should serve as a reminder of what is possible when leaders combine courage with vision.
She praised Ghana’s first president as a nationalist and pan-Africanist whose bold leadership inspired the nation to “punch above its weight” on the global stage during the independence struggle. In stark contrast, she argued, today’s leadership is heavy on rhetoric but light on delivery.
“He [Kwame Nkrumah] had the courage to dream big, and it seems like we’ve lost that courage as a nation. We talk a lot. He was a talker and a doer. All we do these days is talk and talk and talk, and then, if we are lucky as citizens, a little bit will be done,” she lamented.
Madam Bright noted that Ghana’s ability to be self-reliant and truly independent has been eroded, leaving the nation struggling to reach its full potential.
She stressed that Nkrumah’s vision remains unfinished, likening his efforts to laying the foundation of an uncompleted house. According to her, successive generations have a duty to complete and furnish it.
“I think Nkrumah’s dream is not finished. It hasn’t been realised, and every Founder’s Day I’m reminded of the urgent need for us to actually finish this uncompleted dream of achieving real independence and real self-reliance,” she said.
While acknowledging that development is a gradual process, Madam Bright argued that Ghana should have advanced beyond its current pace.
“Development doesn’t happen overnight, but the steps we are taking are just baby steps. We should be leaping now, and we are not,” she stressed.
