GCB Bank has signalled its readiness to play a pioneering role in supporting Ghana’s booming creative economy by positioning itself as a payment gateway for TikTok content creators.
On Monday, a delegation from the bank, led by Chief of Staff Mr Abraham Ferguson, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), to discuss a potential collaboration aimed at establishing a comprehensive payment framework for Ghanaian TikTok creators.
Highlighting the bank’s robust financial systems, Mr Ferguson noted that GCB possesses extensive infrastructure and technological readiness to handle direct payouts for content creators.
“The bank possesses robust connectivity with MasterCard and Visa, enabling it to accept and make payments directly onto cards,” he said, adding that GCB can also facilitate payouts through mobile money platforms, direct bank accounts, and other secure channels.
He explained that the initiative seeks to provide a direct and transparent mechanism for Ghanaian content creators to receive their rightful earnings, particularly from TikTok gifts and monetisation streams, without relying on costly intermediaries.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George welcomed the proposal and actively pushed for its adoption during discussions with Ms Tokumbo Ibrahim, TikTok’s West Africa representative.
According to him, utilising GCB Bank as an official payments channel would not only create a reliable mechanism for local creators but also eliminate dependency on third-party agents, which often erode creators’ earnings through excessive charges.
“This will ensure greater financial benefit for Ghanaian talent while deepening confidence in the digital economy,” the minister emphasised.
In response, Ms Ibrahim committed to reviewing the feasibility of the proposed framework, noting that TikTok was open to exploring payment solutions that align with regulatory requirements and enhance creator experiences across the region.
Mr Ferguson expressed optimism about TikTok’s response, stating that a positive outcome would immediately pave the way for technical teams to establish a direct integration between GCB Bank and TikTok, in consultation with Ghana’s financial authorities.
“This would involve formalising a payment framework and ensuring seamless integration that guarantees swift, transparent and secure payouts to Ghanaian creators,” he said.
