President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to stamping out illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, assuring civil society groups, faith-based organisations, and environmental advocates of decisive government action.
Speaking at a high-level stakeholder engagement on galamsey held in Accra on Friday, October 3, the President stressed the importance of public pressure, accountability, and advocacy in sustaining the national campaign against illegal mining — a practice that continues to ravage Ghana’s forests and water bodies.
“I want to assure you that we are determined to win this fight,” President Mahama declared, highlighting his administration’s ongoing crackdown on illegal mining activities.
In a rare show of political openness, Mahama acknowledged the crucial role of civic pressure and public criticism in driving government action.
“Your contributions, your criticisms, your pressure — putting fire under our feet — we don’t have any problem with that,” he said, encouraging stakeholders to keep holding the government accountable.
The President urged civil society to sustain their advocacy efforts, describing their role as a “necessary force” that keeps the government focused and committed to achieving tangible results.
“You must continue to do your advocacy to urge us on, to encourage us to win the fight,” he added.
Mahama’s remarks come amid renewed calls from groups such as the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, which has urged the government to set clear benchmarks, prosecute galamsey kingpins, and establish fast-track courts to deal with environmental crimes.
