The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has honoured four veteran diplomats for their outstanding contributions to Ghana’s diplomacy and international relations.
At a special ceremony held in Accra last Friday, Dr Obed Asamoah, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, and Ambassador Chris Kpodo were celebrated for their decades of service in shaping Ghana’s foreign policy and strengthening the nation’s voice on the world stage.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa hailed the honourees as “diplomatic giants” whose wisdom and service remain relevant to Ghana’s present and future.
“Their legacy and wisdom will not be discarded or discounted,” he stressed.
The Honourees
- Dr Obed Asamoah
Ghana’s longest-serving Foreign Minister (1982–1997), Dr Asamoah also served as Attorney-General. His influence cut across both law and diplomacy, playing a pivotal role during crucial years of political transition. - Ambassador James Victor Gbeho
A veteran diplomat and former MP for Keta, Gbeho represented Ghana at the United Nations from 1980 to 1990. He later served as Foreign Minister (1997–2001) and President of the ECOWAS Commission (2010–2012), gaining recognition for his multilateral leadership. - Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas
Chambas began as Deputy Foreign Minister in the early 1990s before rising to continental and global prominence. His career spans leadership of the ECOWAS Commission, the ACP Group of States, and senior UN roles. He currently serves as the African Union’s High Representative for Silencing the Guns. - Ambassador Chris Kpodo
Joining the Foreign Service in 1973, Kpodo went on to serve as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo and later as Deputy Foreign Minister under President John Atta Mills. He is widely respected for mentoring young diplomats and his professionalism in both regional and bilateral diplomacy.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah praised the four statesmen for elevating Ghana’s image as a credible and respected global actor. He noted that their achievements laid the foundation for Ghana’s current focus on economic diplomacy aimed at attracting investment, jobs, and technology.
The event, attended by senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and young Foreign Service officers, ended with a call for the next generation of diplomats to emulate the dedication and excellence of the honourees.
