Fire Destroys Multiple Structures at Madina Redco

A fierce fire ripped through several makeshift wooden and metal structures near the Madina Redco Flats in Accra on Sunday, August 3, leaving destruction in its wake, but no casualties were reported.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the emergency response was swift. An emergency call was received at exactly 12:36 p.m., and within four minutes, the first fire engine from the Madina Fire Station was dispatched and arrived at the scene by 12:40 p.m.

Due to the intensity of the blaze, reinforcements were called in from Legon, Abelempke, and the GNFS Headquarters, bringing the total number of fire appliances deployed to five.

The affected area, densely packed with makeshift structures serving both residential and commercial purposes, sustained significant damage. Several traders’ wares and utility poles were also destroyed in the inferno.

Firefighters worked for over an hour before successfully bringing the flames under control at 1:56 p.m. Overhauling operations are currently ongoing to eliminate any residual fire pockets and prevent a potential reignition.

While no lives were lost and no injuries have been reported, the cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. The GNFS has launched an investigation to determine what triggered the blaze.

Authorities are also assessing the full extent of the damage, as many victims are believed to have lost their livelihoods and homes.
