Fifi Kwetey Urges Full Return of Rawlings Family to NDC Core

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has made a passionate call for the full reintegration of the family of the party’s founder, the late President Jerry John Rawlings, into the core of the party’s operations and future.

Speaking during the party’s commemoration of Rawlings’ 78th birthday—marked annually as Rawlings Day—on Sunday, June 22, 2025, Mr. Kwetey said the involvement of the Rawlings family was essential not only to honour the legacy of the party’s visionary founder but also to reignite the original mission upon which the NDC was built.

“The moment has come for the family of Rawlings to again be in the very foundation of everything with them,” he declared, adding that the party cannot truly reconnect with its roots without embracing the Rawlings lineage.

He specifically extended a hand to Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, the former First Lady and widow of the late president, encouraging her to return to the NDC fold. Mr Kwetey also acknowledged Rawlings’ children, including Amina and Kimathi Rawlings, as crucial links to the party’s heritage and future.

Addressing party faithful gathered at the NDC headquarters in Accra, the General Secretary described Jerry John Rawlings as a man born with divine purpose—a revolutionary figure whose legacy should not be relegated to mere memory but revitalised through renewed action and unity.

“It is a celebration of a special person who actually was born with a special mission, and we happen to be beneficiaries of that mission,” he said.

“This is the time to honour the memory of this great soul and ensure that whatever he started… the real reset agenda that he had in mind can start to happen.”

Mr Kwetey’s comments reflect a growing sentiment within the NDC that reconnecting with the Rawlings legacy is vital to rebuilding the party’s foundational ideals and mobilising grassroots energy ahead of future elections.

Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving leader, transitioned from military ruler to democratically elected president, founding the NDC in 1992. His leadership style, rooted in accountability, social justice, and anti-corruption, still resonates with many within and beyond the party.

The call for reintegration comes amid efforts by the NDC to heal past internal divisions and reposition itself as a party grounded in its values and united in purpose.

“Rawlings Day” is now observed each year by the NDC to celebrate the life, values, and contribution of the late statesman, who passed away in November 2020.
