Federation of Africa University Sports Hails UDS on Historic Football Championship Victory

The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) has lauded the University for Development Studies (UDS) for making history as the first African university to win the FISU World University Football Cup, following their thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Brazil’s Paulista University in Dalian, China.

The dramatic final on September 28 saw UDS overturn an early setback after Gabriel Viera shocked the Ghanaians with a goal in the opening 30 seconds. Refusing to surrender, captain Asigre Sulemana equalised deep into injury time before Ezedeen Alhassan struck the decisive winner in extra time, sealing a monumental triumph for the Tamale-based university.

In its congratulatory statement, FASU praised UDS and the wider Ghanaian university sports community for lifting African university football to unprecedented heights.

“On behalf of the entire African university sports family, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you, the University for Development Studies, and the wider Ghanaian university sports community on your historic victory,” the statement read. “This achievement is a source of immense pride not only for UDS and Ghana, but for Africa as a whole.”

The victory not only secured UDS the championship but also guaranteed African universities additional slots in the 2026 edition of the tournament — a development FASU described as a “true milestone” for the continent.

FASU highlighted the dedication of UDS players and coaches, while commending the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Seidu and Head Coach Tanko Ibrahim, along with the strong institutional backing of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA).

“Beyond winning the trophy, your success has secured additional slots for African teams in next year’s edition, opening greater opportunities for our continent to shine even brighter on the global stage,” the statement added.

The win has been hailed across Ghana and beyond as a transformative moment for African university sport, inspiring hope that more institutions on the continent can compete — and triumph — on the world stage.

FASU concluded with a message of pride and encouragement: “We salute you, your students, and the entire UDS community for flying the African flag so high. May this victory inspire even more growth, confidence, and excellence in university sports across our continent.”
