The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that Solomon Asamoah, the former CEO of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) and a key suspect in the Sky Train Scandal, is currently evading prosecution by hiding in Senegal.
Addressing the media on the ongoing investigation, Dr Ayine revealed that $2 million was disbursed for the controversial Sky Train Project at the request of Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, then Chairman of the GIIF Board of Directors, along with Asamoah.
The project, initially touted as a game-changer for Ghana’s transport sector, has now become the subject of a major financial misconduct probe.
Authorities initially tracked Asamoah to South Africa after he departed Ghana on February 2. However, he later moved to Senegal and has refused to return for questioning.
“In respect of the Sky Train investigation, we can confirm that the $2 million was paid at the request of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, and then CEO Solomon Asamoah, who is currently hiding in Senegal. We tracked him first to South Africa after he left Ghana on February 2. Later, we discovered that he had moved to Senegal,” Dr Ayine stated.
He further noted that Asamoah, when contacted, claimed he would not return to Ghana until three months from now.
“So we are patiently waiting for him. If he chooses to be tried in absentia, that is his decision. However, we have the prosecutorial authority to proceed with the case in his absence. Meanwhile, his associate, Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi, remains in Ghana and will face prosecution,” the Attorney General affirmed.
The Sky Train Project was initially introduced under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government as a groundbreaking initiative to modernise Ghana’s transportation network.
However, financial mismanagement allegations have cast a shadow over the project, turning it into one of the country’s most controversial infrastructure dealings.
With authorities determined to bring those involved to justice, the case against Solomon Asamoah and other key figures is expected to proceed, even if it means prosecuting him in absentia.
