Esports Ghana Urges Gamers to Build Brands Beyond Competition

General Secretary of the Esports Association of Ghana, Dabi Diamond,

General Secretary of the Esports Association of Ghana, Dabi Diamond, has called on gamers to expand their focus beyond tournaments and embrace content creation, branding, and streaming as critical tools for building sustainable careers in esports.

Speaking at the MTN DigiFest 2025 Gaming Focus Group and Closing Session, she stressed that simply sitting down to play games and compete is not enough in today’s fast-evolving esports industry.

“We are all just gamers. But sitting down and playing a game, competing in tournaments, is not enough. You need to be able to bring yourself to gaming—by creating content, streaming it, and showcasing it on social media to build a portfolio that can attract sponsorships or investors,” she said.

She noted that many international players are already leveraging this strategy. According to him, Ghanaian gamers must begin positioning themselves as brands to tap into opportunities such as endorsements, partnerships, and influencer deals with both local and international companies.

“Sometimes the real money doesn’t come from winning competitions—it comes from how well you package yourself. A gamer who streams consistently may get signed by MTN for advertising or attract deals from brands like Black Secret. That’s how you make your revenue beyond tournaments,” Dabi Diamond explained.

She emphasised that being competitive alone does not guarantee income, as players may spend resources travelling and preparing for competitions but return home without winnings. Instead, diversifying into streaming and digital content opens additional revenue streams.

Dabi Diamond cited Ghanaian gamer WonderKid as an example, noting how his shift from competitive gaming to streaming on TikTok has earned him followers and new sources of income.

“How you position yourself beyond playing the game is what makes you profitable. That’s something all our gamers need to do,” he advised.

The Esports Ghana executive added that esports in the country will only thrive if players see themselves as part of a broader entertainment and digital ecosystem, where gaming is not just about winning but about building sustainable careers through content, community, and creativity.
