The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) has suspended its planned nationwide strike, which was originally scheduled to begin on November 7, 2025, following positive engagements with the government over unpaid arrears owed to waste management companies.
In a statement signed by Ama Ofori Antwi, Executive Secretary of ESPA, the Association announced that the Minister for Local Government and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, had reached out to its leadership for an urgent dialogue to address the long-standing payment delays affecting members.
According to the statement, the minister assured ESPA of the government’s commitment to process and settle the arrears within the shortest possible time. The discussions, it said, will also explore sustainable policy and funding mechanisms for the waste management sector to prevent future disruptions.
“In light of these positive engagements, I, on behalf of the National Executive Council, wish to urge all member companies to suspend the planned nationwide strike,” the statement read. “We strongly advise that members continue their normal operations despite the daunting challenges as leadership works closely with the government to reach a firm and mutually beneficial resolution of the impasse.”
ESPA expressed appreciation to its members for their patience, professionalism, and continued service under difficult financial circumstances. The Association emphasised that waste collection and sanitation services are critical to public health and environmental safety and that maintaining stability during negotiations is a top priority.
“We remain confident that our continued dialogue with the government will yield the necessary outcomes to stabilise the sector and safeguard the livelihoods of thousands of workers and the environment,” Madam Ofori Antwi stated.
The Association further urged all member companies to remain calm and united, refraining from any action that could disrupt essential sanitation services while discussions are ongoing.
ESPA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of all members and ensuring that Ghana’s waste management infrastructure continues to operate efficiently for the benefit of the public.
