Chloe Kelly delivered another iconic moment in her England career, smashing home the decisive penalty as the Lionesses beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to win Euro 2025 and defend their European crown in spectacular fashion.
In a gripping final that ended 1-1 after extra time, England showed relentless character once more—coming from behind and surviving relentless Spanish pressure—before triumphing in a dramatic shootout.
The final served as a revenge mission for Sarina Wiegman’s side, who were beaten by Spain in the 2023 World Cup final. And they delivered.
Spain drew first blood in the 25th minute, with Mariona Caldentey rising to power home a header after fine work by Aitana Bonmati and Ona Batlle. But Alessia Russo equalised just after the break, nodding in Kelly’s inch-perfect cross in the 57th minute.
England was dealt a blow when Lauren James went off before halftime with a knock, but substitute Kelly immediately brought energy and width to England’s attack.
Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton produced a series of phenomenal saves during open play and became the undisputed heroine of the shootout. She denied both Caldentey and Bonmati from the spot, while Vicky Lopez skied Spain’s final attempt.
Although Beth Mead’s first penalty was ruled out for a double touch and subsequently saved, Niamh Charles and Alex Greenwood converted theirs, setting the stage for Kelly.
As she did at Wembley in Euro 2022, the ice-cool winger buried her penalty into the roof of the net—sealing another fairytale finish for England.
Notable Highlights:
- Lucy Bronze became the most-capped Lioness in major tournaments with her 36th appearance.
- Michelle Agyemang, 19, made a late impact after coming on in the second half.
- Spain’s Esther Gonzalez, the tournament’s top scorer, was kept quiet by a resilient England backline.
This victory confirms back-to-back Euro titles for England under Wiegman and marks another landmark in the Lionesses’ golden era.
Kelly, once again the match-winner, summed it up best: “Big moments, big players. We never give up. This team has heart.”
England are champions of Europe—again.
