Electrochem Ghana workers stage Demonstration in Ada Over Layoffs

Dozens of workers of Electrochem Ghana Limited in Ada have staged a protest following the abrupt termination of their contracts by the salt-mining company on Friday, August 15, 2025.

The aggrieved workers, who took to the streets on Monday morning, accused management of unfair treatment and flouting due process in ending their employment. The protest, which disrupted some operations at the company’s site, was monitored by Adom News’ Tema Regional Correspondent, Issabella Gidiglo Ave.

According to the workers, the dismissals were carried out without prior notice or explanation, a situation they described as unlawful and disrespectful.

“They terminated our contracts without any notice, which is not the right procedure,” one worker lamented. “We are calling on management to come out and tell us why our contracts were terminated. They need to give us answers.”

Electrochem Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the McDan Group, holds a 41,000-acre concession in the Ada Songor Lagoon for large-scale salt production. The company has invested more than $88 million in its operations, which serve as a major economic lifeline for the Ada community.

The sudden layoffs, estimated to involve dozens of workers, have sparked concerns about the potential ripple effects on families and the local economy.

Labour experts have pointed to Section 15 of Ghana’s Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which requires that contracts of employment be terminated in writing, with appropriate notice or compensation. The workers’ claims of being dismissed “without any notice” raise questions about the company’s compliance with the law.

As of press time, management of Electrochem Ghana Limited had not issued any statement regarding the protest or the reasons behind the mass terminations. Security personnel were deployed to the scene to maintain calm and prevent the demonstration from escalating.
