The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Yilo Krobo, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, has lauded the Member of Parliament (MP) for Yilo Krobo, Hon. Dr Albert Nyakotey, for his unwavering commitment to supporting education in the municipality, describing the MP’s recent initiative as both “timely and impactful”.
The commendation came during a ceremony where Dr Nyakotey presented over 250 chop-boxes, mattresses, exercise books, and other essential educational materials to students who excelled in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The gesture is aimed at easing the financial burden on parents and motivating students as they transition into senior high school.
“We thank Hon. Dr Albert Nyakotey for supporting the best-performing student in each of our basic schools across the municipality,” Hon. Akumatey stated. “This initiative is a very welcome one, which will go a long way in easing the burden of parents as they prepare their wards for senior high school.”
Hon. Akumatey emphasised that while Free SHS has relieved families of tuition costs, parents still play a crucial role in ensuring their children are adequately prepared. He described the intervention as a “lifeline” for many families, especially those in rural communities.
“Even though senior high school education is free, some commitment is still required for parents to complement the government’s effort in providing quality education for our children. This intervention, therefore, comes at the very best time for our parents,” he added.
The MCE highlighted the government’s continued prioritisation of education through increased allocations to the sector under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF). He explained that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) now have a mandatory responsibility to invest in basic educational infrastructure to create a solid foundation for learning.
“As an assembly, we are committed to implementing initiatives in the education sector that will endure to the benefit of our children and enable them to compete with their peers nationwide,” he said.
He further noted that interventions such as the MP’s donation serve a dual purpose: easing the financial load on parents while motivating students to work harder, knowing their achievements are recognised by leaders in their community.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Akumatey encouraged the students to view this recognition as a stepping stone toward greater achievements in their academic journey.
“Use this recognition as a stepping stone to aim high in life. As you prepare to enter senior high school, focus on learning and make your families and Yilo Krobo proud. The Honourable MP believes in you. You are the future of our municipality, and you cannot fail us,” he urged.
He also expressed hope that the MP’s initiative would continue in subsequent years, stating humorously,
“Like Oliver Twist, we hope to receive more in the future.”
The donation forms part of Hon. Dr Nyakotey’s broader educational support programme, designed to promote academic excellence and ease financial pressure on parents in the Yilo Krobo constituency. The packages will support students as they begin senior high school, ensuring that no child is left behind due to financial constraints.
