DSTV Wahala: “Ghanaians Are Being Charged an Unfair Price”—Sam “George Declares in Facebook Post

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has publicly accused pay-TV giant DSTV of charging Ghanaians unfair and unreasonable prices for its service bouquets.

In a strongly worded Facebook post on Friday, August 1, 2025, Sam George wrote:

“I have considered levels of taxation, depreciation of currencies, and population of markets and come to the firm conclusion that Ghanaians are being charged an unfair and unreasonable price for the bouquets on DSTV.”

This social media declaration preceded an official address at the Government Accountability Series held the same day, where the minister gave DSTV a seven-day ultimatum to reduce its subscription charges or risk having its broadcasting license suspended.

During the media briefing, Hon. George revealed that he had formally directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to begin processes for license suspension if DSTV failed to comply by Wednesday, August 7.

“I have directed the NCA to act swiftly. If by the 7th of August DSTV has not complied, their broadcasting license will be suspended,” he declared.

He said the government’s patience had worn thin with foreign service providers exploiting Ghanaians under the pretext of global economic challenges.

DSTV, in a recent correspondence with the Ministry, defended its pricing by citing the more than 200% depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi over the past eight years. The company claimed this economic reality made price reductions unsustainable.

But Sam George firmly rejected this reasoning.

“DSTV claims the Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by over 200% in the last eight years, and therefore, they cannot reduce their prices. My fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people. They have been cheated for years, and it is time we put an end to that,” he said.

The minister further emphasised that DSTV’s pricing model does not align with market realities and that Ghanaians should not pay more than citizens in countries with stronger currencies and larger populations.

The National Communications Authority is expected to act promptly if DSTV fails to adjust its prices. The minister also hinted at possible further regulatory actions beyond license suspension if compliance is not achieved.

“We will not allow foreign service providers to take advantage of our citizens under the guise of economic pressures. Enough is enough,” Sam George added.
