DStv will launch a dedicated SuperSport channel for the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in December, following an announcement by Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot and CAF President Patrice Motsepe at SuperSport’s Studio 6 on Thursday, November 6.
The 2025 AFCON, hosted by Morocco, will kick off on December 21 and will be broadcast across Africa in multiple languages, including English, French, Portuguese, and several indigenous African languages.
Mignot said the new channel reflects the success of the merger between Canal+ and MultiChoice, aimed at delivering “unprecedented coverage” of Africa’s premier football tournament.
“Our newly forged merger with MultiChoice has already unlocked opportunities and benefits for our customers,” he said. “This year’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is a great demonstration of the power and potential of this common ambition—bringing together our expertise to offer exceptional coverage to millions of African fans.”
He added that broadcasting the tournament in multiple languages underscores Canal+’s mission to strengthen its connection with African audiences.
French media giant Groupe Canal+ officially took control of MultiChoice on September 22, 2025, after fulfilling all takeover conditions. The company had initially presented an offer to acquire MultiChoice last year after surpassing the 35 per cent shareholding threshold under South Africa’s Companies Act.
Canal+ made its first investment in MultiChoice in October 2020, acquiring a 6.5 per cent stake, and gradually increased its ownership over time. The final offer of $6.5 billion—equivalent to $6.7 per share—valued MultiChoice at roughly $2.9 billion.
Mignot has said the merger will not only improve sports broadcasting but also enrich DStv’s entertainment catalogue. Canal+ currently produces 4,000 hours of African content annually in up to 15 languages, while MultiChoice contributes 6,000 hours each year. Combined, the partnership will yield about 10,000 hours of African programming annually, available in as many as 35 languages.
“Over a 10- to 15-year period, we will build a catalogue of 100,000 to 150,000 hours, which can then travel across borders through dubbing and rescripting,” Mignot said.
As part of their collaboration, DStv has already begun airing select French Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches live on SuperSport, giving African viewers access to top-tier French football featuring stars like Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué.
“SuperSport will broadcast up to three Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches per weekend to DStv, DStv Stream, and GOtv subscribers across the continent,” the network confirmed.
