Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid’s Lawyers Dismiss OSP Claims of GHS 100m Asset Seizure as False and Misleading

Lawyers representing the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, have strongly denied claims by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) that assets worth over GHS 100 million (approximately US$6.9 million) and US$100,000 linked to their client have been seized.

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 6, 2025, the legal team described the OSP’s public assertions as “false, misleading, and injurious,” insisting that no property or business belonging to Dr Abdul-Hamid has been identified, traced, or confiscated in connection with the ongoing NPA corruption case.

According to the OSP’s post on its official Facebook page, Dr Abdul-Hamid is alleged to have played a central role in what it called a “grand extortion and laundering scheme” that caused the state and petroleum sector losses exceeding GHS 291 million (US$20 million) and US$330,000. The OSP also claimed that it had already frozen assets valued at more than GHS 100 million and was tracing additional properties tied to the alleged offences.

However, Dr Abdul-Hamid’s lawyers say these claims directly contradict the OSP’s own charge sheet and court filings.

“The OSP’s amended charge sheet filed on 17th October 2025 lists five counts of alleged offences against our client. Not one of those charges mentions, refers to, or concerns any asset or business purportedly owned by Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid,” the statement noted.

“Similarly, the accompanying statement of facts filed by the OSP is devoid of any reference to the supposed assets. It is therefore false and inconsistent for the OSP to make public claims that do not align with its court filings.”

The legal team cautioned the OSP to refrain from “media theatrics” and “public commentary that distorts facts before the court,” adding that such conduct undermines the integrity of the judicial process and violates the ethical obligations of the prosecutorial office.

They emphasised that Dr Abdul-Hamid has cooperated fully with investigators, honoured all invitations, and appeared in court at every sitting since the case began.

“It is deeply regrettable that instead of complying with court directives, including the order to file its disclosures, the OSP has chosen to engage in false reportage,” the statement said.

The lawyers reiterated that their client remains innocent until proven guilty, in accordance with Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, and warned against any attempt to prejudice public opinion through misinformation.

Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid and nine others are currently facing 54 counts, including extortion, abuse of public office, and money laundering, involving hundreds of millions of cedis and foreign currency allegedly extorted from bulk oil transporters and oil marketing companies under the guise of official duties.

The case is expected to continue at the High Court on November 13, 2025.
