The Africa Centre for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development (CDS Africa) has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to ignore mounting petitions calling for the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, and her fellow commissioners — Samuel Tetteh, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, and Dr. Peter Appiahene.
In a petition dated March 4, 2025, the civil society group acknowledged ongoing demands from groups such as the Positive Transparency & Accountability Movement-Ghana and individuals like Ofosu-Appiah Daniel for the dismissal of the commissioners.
However, CDS Africa warned that such a move, though potentially legal, could jeopardise institutional independence and Ghana’s democratic maturity.
“By choosing not to forward these petitions to the Chief Justice for action, Your Excellency would reaffirm your commitment to strengthening our democracy and ensuring that Ghana’s Electoral Commission remains a truly independent institution, free from political interference,” the group stated.
CDS Africa stressed that preserving continuity at the EC would be a powerful message of non-partisanship, institutional integrity, and political maturity—especially in an election cycle.
The petition further urged the president to break the cycle of political interference by setting a new standard for future administrations.
“You have the opportunity to set a historic precedent—one that prevents future presidents from removing electoral commissioners appointed by their predecessors, thereby shielding the EC from undue political influence,” the petition concluded.
The appeal comes at a time of renewed scrutiny on the EC’s leadership and ahead of crucial electoral reforms. Analysts say President Mahama’s decision on the matter could have long-term implications for public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
