Dollar Gift Saga: Minority Demands Tough Action from Mahama against Sammy Gyamfi

The minority caucus in Parliament is calling for decisive action from President John Dramani Mahama against the acting chief executive officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, following a viral video that shows him handing out US dollar notes to self-styled evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The footage, which has triggered widespread public outrage, has been widely condemned as inappropriate and unethical conduct by a senior public official. Although Gyamfi has since issued a public apology, describing the gesture as a private act of kindness, his explanation has failed to quell the backlash.

Addressing journalists in Parliament, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, a minority member on the Finance Committee, described Gyamfi’s actions as emblematic of what he called the “arrogance, hypocrisy, and gross insensitivity” of the Mahama administration.

“This display of financial recklessness is not only a betrayal of public trust but also a slap in the face of the millions of Ghanaians currently grappling with the devastating effects of cedi inflation and the unbearable cost of living,” Dr Mahama said.

He further criticised the administration’s silence on the matter, warning that failure to act would send the wrong message about accountability within government.

“It is even more shameful that this act was committed by someone who has, in the past, championed populist rhetoric about economic discipline, cedi loyalty, and anti-corruption,” he added.

The minority is urging President Mahama to demonstrate leadership by removing Gyamfi from office and initiating a full-scale investigation into the source and purpose of the funds involved.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has summoned Sammy Gyamfi to explain the circumstances surrounding the transaction amid growing political and public pressure.
