Desist From Sharing Indecent and Irresponsible Content on Social Media- CSA Warns SHS Graduates

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has cautioned recent high school graduates to desist from sharing indecent and irresponsible content on social media, warning that such behaviour could have long-lasting consequences on their academic and professional futures.

According to the Authority, several posts by graduates celebrating the end of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have gone viral, featuring troubling statements such as “we go scatter them” and remarks about “snatching people’s husbands”.

While recognising social media as an important space for expression, networking, and creativity, the CSA reminded young users that online activity leaves a permanent digital footprint.

“Universities, scholarship boards, and employers routinely review applicants’ social media profiles. Irresponsible content can severely damage one’s academic, career, and professional prospects,” the Authority warned.

Beyond reputational damage, the CSA also highlighted the dangers of cyberbullying, harassment, grooming, and exploitation that can arise from irresponsible posts. In extreme cases, such content may fall foul of Ghana’s Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), and the Electronic Communications Act, potentially exposing individuals to legal action.

The Authority urged graduates to embrace a thoughtful and respectful approach to their online presence, encouraging them to use social media as a platform for:

“As Ghana continues its digital transformation, promoting positive digital citizenship among the youth is essential,” the CSA stressed.

The CSA pledged to continue collaborating with the Ministry of Education, civil society organisations, and community leaders to strengthen digital literacy and awareness campaigns.

The Authority’s call comes as part of its broader agenda to ensure young Ghanaians harness the benefits of digital platforms safely while avoiding reputational and legal pitfalls.
