Deputy Roads Minister Apologises Over Ofankor–Nsawam Traffic Woes

Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has apologised to motorists and commuters grappling with severe traffic congestion along the Ofankor–Pokuase–Nsawam road, attributing the situation to the deplorable state of the 33.4-kilometre stretch.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament, Mr Suhuyini acknowledged that the road had become a major source of frustration but assured the public that work was back on track.

“I have my minister’s permission to, first of all, apologise to all motorists on that stretch. It’s one of the hot potatoes we inherited at the Ministry. By the time we assumed office, the contractor, like many others, had abandoned the site due to non-payment,” he explained.

He disclosed that the Roads Ministry, in collaboration with the Finance Ministry, had secured funding to allow the contractor to return to the site.

“Fortunately, the contractor has received some payment and is now fully mobilised. We are optimistic that before the end of this year, significant progress will be visible, and the project will finally be on schedule,” he added.

The Ofankor–Pokuase–Nsawam road, one of the busiest arteries linking Accra to the Eastern and Ashanti regions, has long been plagued by traffic congestion, worsened by potholes and abandoned construction works. The Deputy Minister’s assurance is expected to bring some relief to motorists who have endured years of gridlock.
