In a significant leadership transition within the Ghana Police Service, President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the country’s new Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The appointment, announced on Thursday, March 13, was formalised in a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Friday, March 14, attended by senior government officials and top security personnel.
COP Yohuno assumes the role at a crucial time, succeeding Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. He brings with him over four decades of experience in law enforcement, a tenure characterised by dedication, crime prevention expertise, and operational excellence.
COP Yohuno has served in various leadership positions within the Ghana Police Service. His law enforcement career has been marked by notable contributions to public safety and security operations. Prior to his new role, he served as the Deputy IGP in charge of Operations, a position he was appointed to in July 2024 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, following the recommendation of the Police Council.
His earlier roles include Accra Central Divisional Commander (2007–2009), Accra Regional Operations Commander, Deputy Accra Regional Commander, and subsequently Accra Regional Commander in 2013.
He was later appointed Director-General of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) in December 2015 before being reassigned as Director-General of Administration in 2016.
In recognition of his service, COP Yohuno was awarded the Grand Medal in 2011 for his efforts in combating armed robbery and other serious crimes. His contributions also earned him a special promotion to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) in January 2012 and later to Commissioner of Police (COP) on January 1, 2016, by then-President Mahama.
As Ghana’s new IGP, COP Yohuno is expected to spearhead crucial reforms within the police force, focusing on crime reduction, professional discipline, and improved public trust. His leadership will be pivotal in modernising policing strategies, strengthening law enforcement capabilities, and ensuring efficiency in service delivery.
COP Yohuno’s commitment to professional growth is reflected in his educational achievements. He is an alumnus of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School and later pursued a bachelor’s degree at the University of Ghana. He further obtained an Executive MBA in Project Management from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
With his extensive experience and strategic leadership, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno is poised to drive transformational changes within the Ghana Police Service.
His tenure is expected to emphasise accountability, operational effectiveness, and enhanced security measures, ensuring that law enforcement remains steadfast in its duty to protect and serve the Ghanaian people.
