AUDIO: Conduct of Police Officers Spraying Money On New IGP ‘Unprofessional’- Retired ACP

A retired Assistant Commissioner of the Ghana Police Service, Jango Nuhu has strongly condemned the actions of police officers who were seen spraying money on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu.

He described their behaviour as unprofessional and a disgrace to the integrity of the police service.

According to ACP Jango Nuhu, while excitement over the leadership change is understandable, the public display of officers scrambling for money in uniform was inappropriate and tarnished the image of the service.

“I understand that some officers were not happy with Dr George Akufo Dampare’s leadership, as they believed he did not prioritise their welfare. However, resorting to spraying money in such a manner is highly unprofessional and unacceptable,” ACP Nuhu stated.

He further warned that such conduct violates police ethics, and if an investigation is conducted, those involved could face disciplinary action.

Speaking in a phone interview with Hot FM Morning Drive, ACP Jango Nuhu emphasised that leadership changes within the police service are normal, especially following a change in government.

However, the manner in which some officers celebrated Dr Dampare’s removal was inappropriate and did not reflect the discipline expected of the officer force.

His comments come after widespread excitement within the Ghana Police Service following the appointment of Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new IGP. Officers have expressed optimism about his leadership and the new direction he will bring to the service.

IGP Yohunu was officially sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, March 14, at the Jubilee House, replacing Dr. George Akufo Dampare.

Shortly after his swearing-in, he visited the police headquarters, where he was met with loud cheers and praise.

However, celebrations took an unprofessional turn when some jubilant officers were seen showering him with money in an extravagant display of approval.

ACP Jango Nuhu reiterated that while some officers outwardly admired Dr Dampare for his work ethic, many secretly wished for a change due to concerns about their welfare. Despite this, he urged officers to uphold the professionalism and discipline expected of them, regardless of leadership transitions.

He called on police personnel to maintain decorum and respect for the institution, warning that such an unprofessional display could undermine the service’s credibility and public trust.
